Scruffy Scott scrubbed seven scratchy scrolls.
Four of the six words start with SCR, which is S, K and R in a row. Scott and seven start with simpler sounds, and they are the words that trip you up.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- SCR /skr/, as in scruffy, scrubbed, scratchy and scrolls. Make an S, then a quick K, then pull the tongue back for the R.
- SK /sk/, as in Scott. The same start, with no R.
- S /s/, as in seven. A plain hiss, with nothing after it.
- CH /tʃ/, as in scratchy. The tongue pushes against the ridge behind your top teeth and releases with a little burst.
Quick test: say stroll, then scroll. Only the T has become a K.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly. Keep the S, K and R together.
Scruffy Scott
scrubbed seven
scratchy scrolls.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
SCRUFfy SCOTT SCRUBBED SEVen SCRATCHy SCROLLS.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Scruffy Scott scrubbed seven scratchy scrolls.
If scrubbed sounds like shrubbed, or scrolls sounds like strolls, slow down and keep the K.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
- Three sounds in a row. SCR needs S, K and R almost at once, and it starts four of the six words.
- The pattern breaks twice. Scott has only SK and seven has only S, so your tongue has to drop the R and then pick it up again.
- The K and R sit close together. The K uses the back of the tongue, and the R pulls the tongue back too, so the two sounds slide into each other.
- The endings are heavy. Scrubbed ends in a B and a D, scrolls ends in L and Z, and scratchy has a CH in the middle.
👀 Words to Notice
- scrub /skrʌb/ and shrub /ʃrʌb/
- scroll /skrəʊl/ and stroll /strəʊl/
- scrap /skræp/ and strap /stræp/
