Sharp shrimp shrieked at the shrinking shrub.
Four of the words start with SHR: shrimp, shrieked, shrinking and shrub. The SH is a hiss, the R is a curl of the tongue, and the two have to join smoothly, without a vowel in between. Sharp has the same SH, but its R comes after a vowel, so it is an easier start.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- SH /ʃ/, as in sharp, shrimp, shrieked. Pull your tongue a little back, round your lips, and let the air hiss.
- R /r/, as in shrimp, shrieked, shrinking, shrub. In most accents, the R is said here, and the tongue curls or bunches up slightly behind the ridge without touching it.
Quick test: say sh and then shr. The r adds a little curl at the end of the hiss. Keep the lips rounded through both sounds.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly. Hiss the SH, then let the R curl in.
Sharp shrimp
shrieked
at the shrinking shrub.
Now say the two halves: Sharp shrimp shrieked … at the shrinking shrub.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say the whole sentence at a natural speed, as if you were describing a noisy pond:
SHARP SHRIMP SHRIEKED at the SHRINK-ing SHRUB.
Keep the SHR together, so the R is part of the same sound as the SH.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Ready? Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Sharp shrimp shrieked at the shrinking shrub.
If the R disappears, slow down for one round and let the curl come through.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
SHR is a cluster that asks your tongue to do two things in quick succession: hiss, then curl.
- SH is made with a flat, slightly back tongue. R is made with a curled or bunched tongue. The shape changes in a split second.
- In shrimp, the hiss and the curl come one after the other, with the lips in the same shape.
- When you rush, the R drops out, and shred sounds like shed. Or the SH gets lost, and shrub sounds like rub.
Do the join slowly first. Speed comes after the shape is clear.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs show what happens when the R or the SH goes missing:
- shred / shed
- shrine / shine
- shrub / rub
Try each pair slowly, then quickly: shred, shed, shred, shed.
🏆 OddLingo Challenge
- Round 1: say it slowly, with the SH and the R clearly joined.
- Round 2: say the whole sentence once at normal speed.
- Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.
Bonus round: make a new sentence with four SHR words: Shrewd shrimp shred the shrubs.
