Fresh French fried fish for Friday.
Every word starts with F, and four of them have an R right after it. Two of the words end in a sh or ch sound.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- F /f/, as in fresh, French, fried, fish, for and Friday. Rest your top teeth on your bottom lip and blow.
- FR /fr/, as in fresh, French, fried and Friday. After the F, your tongue slides back for R.
- SH /ʃ/, as in fresh and fish. A smooth stream of air.
- CH /tʃ/, as in French. A tiny stop, then a sh sound.
Quick test: say fish, then fresh. The R makes the vowel sound different.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly.
Fresh French
fried fish
for Friday.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
FRESH FRENCH FRIED FISH for FRIday.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Fresh French fried fish for Friday.
If fresh and French blur together, slow down and finish each ending before the next F.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
Every word begins with F, and F-R must happen fast.
fresh / French / fried / Friday
- The lips and teeth set the F, and then the tongue must pull back for R.
- Fresh ends in SH, French ends in CH, and fish ends in SH, so the endings look alike.
- Fried and fish both begin with F and have an -i-, so they are easy to swap.
The twister moves between your lips and your tongue many times.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs differ by one sound:
- fry / fly
- fresh / flesh
- fish / fist
Notice how the ends of fresh (SH) and French (CH) are different. Only one has a tiny stop.
