Red lorry, yellow lorry, red lorry, yellow lorry.
This tongue twister is short, but it is a famous tricky one. Swap L and R, and a road becomes a load, and a red lorry becomes a led lorry.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- L /l/, as in lorry and yellow. The tip of your tongue touches the ridge just behind your top teeth, and the sound flows around the sides.
- R /r/, as in red and the second half of lorry. The tongue pulls back and curls a little, but it does not touch anything. Your lips round slightly.
The difference is touching. L touches. R doesn't.
Two words are worth a closer look:
- lorry /ˈlɒri/: say "LOR-ee". It starts with L and finishes with R, so your tongue has to touch, then pull away, inside one word.
- yellow /ˈjeləʊ/: say "YEL-oh". It starts with Y, and the L is in the middle.
Quick test: say light, then right. Feel the tongue touch at the start of light, and stay floating at the start of right.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly. Touch for every L, and float for every R.
Red lorry,
yellow lorry,
red lorry,
yellow lorry.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
RED LORry, YELlow LORry, RED LORry, YELlow LORry.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Red lorry, yellow lorry, red lorry, yellow lorry.
If it turns into led rorry or rellow lolly, slow down. Touch for L, float for R.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
The twister keeps asking your tongue to do the opposite job from the one it just did.
red lorry
yellow lorry
- Red starts with R, and the very next word starts with L. So the tongue goes from floating to touching straight away.
- Lorry has an L and then an R. The tongue has to touch and then pull away, inside one word.
- Yellow has an L in the middle, so the pattern shifts again before the next lorry.
Say it fast and the touching and floating blur together. That is where the swapped sounds come from.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs change meaning with nothing but L and R:
- red / led
- right / light
- road / load
- rink / link
- rate / late
Say each pair slowly, then quickly: road, load, road, load.
🏆 OddLingo Challenge
- Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
- Round 2: say the whole twister once at normal speed.
- Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.
Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:
The little red lorry rolled really slowly along the long road.
Three times, fast, and watch your tongue.
🧐 Did You Know?
In Britain, a big vehicle for carrying goods is a lorry. In the United States, it is a truck. Both words mean the same kind of road vehicle.
Lorry first appeared in 1838 as a railway word for a flat wagon on four wheels. It was used for a motor vehicle that carries goods from 1911. Truck is older: American English began using it for motor vehicles in the early 1900s.
