Plump purple plums plopped on Penny's plate.
Many words start with two consonants side by side. This twister trains the pair P and L: the lips pop for the P, and then the tongue has to jump straight to the L.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- P /p/, as in plump, purple, plums. Press your lips together, hold the air for a moment, and let it pop out.
- L /l/, as in plump, plopped, plate. Lift the tip of your tongue to the ridge just behind your top teeth, and let the air flow around the sides.
Quick test: say pop and then plop. The l is added between the lips and the vowel, so the tongue has to jump in quickly.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly. Pop the P, then lift the tongue for the L.
Plump purple plums
plopped on
Penny's plate.
Now say the first half, plump purple plums, and then the second, plopped on Penny's plate.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say the whole sentence at a natural speed, as if you were describing a fruit bowl:
PLUMP PURple PLUMS PLOPPED on PENny's PLATE.
Keep the P and L together in each word. Don't add a vowel between them.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Ready? Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Plump purple plums plopped on Penny's plate.
If your L disappears, slow down for one round and make sure the tongue lands on the ridge.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
P and L are two different kinds of sounds stuck together:
- P is a sudden pop. Your lips close and then open.
- L is a smooth sound. Your tongue touches the roof of your mouth and the air flows around it.
- In plump, plums and plate, the lips have to pop and the tongue has to land, in less than a blink.
- When you rush, the L can drop out, and plate sounds like pate. Or the L turns into an R, and play sounds like pray.
The smoother the transition, the cleaner the cluster. Practise the join, not just each sound.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs show what happens when the L is missing or turns into an R:
- plot / pot
- plane / pain
- plug / pug
- play / pray
Try each pair slowly, then quickly: play, pray, play, pray.
