Twelve Tiny Twins: A TW Tongue Twister

Twelve tiny twins twirled twenty twigs lines up five words that start with TW, and it is easy to lose the W when you speed up.

Twelve tiny twins twirled twenty twigs.

The TW sound is a T and a W said as one quick move. Say it too slowly and it falls apart into two sounds. Say it too fast and the W disappears, so twin becomes tin.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • TW /tw/, as in twelve, twins, twirled, twenty and twigs. Your tongue taps the ridge behind your top teeth for T, while your lips are already round for W.
  • T /t/, as in tiny. Just a plain T, with no rounded lips.
  • L, R in twelve, twirled: twelve ends with L and V, and twirled has an R and an L.

Quick test: say tin, then twin. The only difference is the rounded lips. If you can feel your lips pucker before your tongue taps, you are doing it right.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly.

Twelve tiny
twins twirled
twenty twigs.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:

TWELVE TIny TWINS TWIRLED TWENty TWIGS.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

Twelve tiny twins twirled twenty twigs.

If the W starts to vanish, slow down. Round your lips first, then tap your tongue.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

Look at the words:

twelve / tiny / twins / twirled / twenty / twigs

  • Five words have TW, but tiny has only T. That one plain T is a trap, because your lips have been round for so long that they want to stay round.
  • Each TW needs two things at once: a tongue tap and round lips. Those are fast, small moves, and it is easy for one of them to go missing.
  • Twirled twenty puts a D right before a T. The tongue stays in almost the same spot, which makes the boundary a little messy.

👀 Words to Notice

These pairs change meaning when TW changes:

  • twin / tin: TW against T
  • twin / win: TW against W
  • twig / wig: TW against W
  • twirl / whirl: TW against W

Say each pair slowly and watch your lips: twin, tin, twin, tin.

🏆 OddLingo Challenge

  1. Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
  2. Round 2: say the whole sentence once at normal speed.
  3. Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.

Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:

Twenty twirling twins tweeted twelve twinkling tunes.

🧐 Did You Know?

Twelve, twin, twice and twenty are all built from the number two. That is why they all begin with TW. And it is also why the number itself is spelled two: the W was once said out loud there too. See Why Is There a W in "Two"? for the story.
