Selfish Shellfish: An S and SH Tongue Twister

Selfish shellfish should share shiny seashells mixes S and SH, and the near-twins selfish and shellfish differ in just one sound.

Selfish shellfish should share shiny seashells.

Every word here has an S or an SH in it, and the first two are almost twins. Selfish and shellfish differ in only one sound, so it is very easy to swap them without noticing.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • S /s/, as in selfish and seashells. Put the tip of your tongue close to the ridge behind your top teeth and let the air hiss through.
  • SH /ʃ/, as in shellfish, should, share, shiny, seashells and the end of selfish. Pull the tongue back a little and round your lips.
  • F /f/, as in selfish and shellfish. Your top teeth rest on your bottom lip.

Quick test: say sell, then shell. Only the first sound moves.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly. Keep the S and SH apart.

Selfish shellfish
should share
shiny seashells.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:

SELFish SHELLfish should SHARE SHIny SEAshells.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

Selfish shellfish should share shiny seashells.

If selfish turns into shellfish, or shellfish into selfish, slow down. They are one sound apart, so the swap is easy to make without hearing it.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

  • Two words, one sound apart. Selfish and shellfish are the same except for the first sound, so your brain keeps swapping them.
  • S and SH keep trading places. For S, the tongue stays close to the teeth. For SH, it pulls back a little and the lips round. The tongue has to change position again and again.
  • SH piles up at the joins. Selfish ends in SH and shellfish starts with one, then shellfish ends in SH and should starts with one, so the sound doubles at each join.
  • An F in the middle. Selfish and shellfish each have an F between the hissing sounds, so your lip has to meet your teeth in a split second.

👀 Words to Notice

  • sell /sɛl/ and shell /ʃɛl/
  • self /sɛlf/ and shelf /ʃɛlf/
  • sort /sɔːt/ and short /ʃɔːt/
  • sock /sɒk/ and shock /ʃɒk/

🏆 OddLingo Challenge

  1. Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
  2. Round 2: say the whole sentence once at normal speed.
  3. Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.

Bonus round: try this one:

Selfish seals shared seven shiny shells.

💡 Did You Know?

Selfish is self plus -ish, while shellfish is shell plus fish. The two words look almost the same on the page, but they are built from completely different parts.
