Trim Trains Trundle: A TR Tongue Twister

Trim trains trundle across tricky tracks, packing the TR cluster into the start of most words.

Trim trains trundle across tricky tracks.

Five of the six words start with TR. Say it quickly and the T and R blur together.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • TR /tr/, as in trim, trains, trundle, tricky, tracks. Make the T, then move straight into the R with the tongue tip pulled back a little.
  • The short vowel /ɪ/ in trim and tricky, and /ʌ/ in trundle, which keeps each cluster crisp.

Quick test: say tree, then tea. The R in tree is the sound to keep.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly. Keep the T and R together.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:

TRIM TRAINS TRUNdle aCROSS TRICKy TRACKS.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

Trim trains trundle across tricky tracks.

If it starts to sound like chrain or chrim, slow down. Some speakers make a T and R that sound a little like CH and R, so aim for a crisp T.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

  • The TR cluster repeats. Five words start with the same two sounds, so your tongue has to switch into the same position again and again.
  • The T and R both need the tongue. The T uses the tongue tip against the ridge, and the R pulls the tongue back. Doing both quickly is the trick.
  • The pattern changes at speed. Across has no TR, so the run of TR words stops and starts again.

👀 Words to Notice

  • tree /triː/
  • truck /trʌk/
  • true /truː/
  • try / dry (TR against DR, a near-twin pair)

🏆 OddLingo Challenge

  1. Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
  2. Round 2: say the whole sentence once at normal speed.
  3. Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.

Bonus round: try this one:

Tree trunks trembled as the truck tried to tip.
