Phil's phone took fifty fine photos of a funny pheasant.
Look at the spellings: Phil's, phone, photos, pheasant all start with PH, and fifty and fine start with F. They all make the same sound.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- F /f/, as in Phil's, phone, photos, fifty, fine, funny and pheasant. Put your top teeth on your bottom lip and let the air out. Do not add a P.
- The PH spelling. It is said as /f/ in most words, so you can practise it as one sound.
Quick test: say phone and fone. They sound the same. Only the spelling is different.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly. Make every F the same, whether it is spelled PH or F.
Phil's phone took fifty
fine photos of a
funny pheasant.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
FILZ FONE TOOK FIFty FINE FOtos of a FUNny FEZant.
Note: the vowel in pheasant is short, as in fez.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Phil's phone took fifty fine photos of a funny pheasant.
If you add a P sound to photos or phone, slow down for one round.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
- Two spellings, one sound. Your eyes see PH and F, but your mouth makes the same F for both.
- The P is not said. The trap is reading the letters and wanting to say a P.
- Many F words in one sentence. Seven words with an F sound make your lips work hard.
👀 Words to Notice
- elephant /ˈɛlɪfənt/: the PH is said as F
- dolphin /ˈdɒlfɪn/ (UK) or /ˈdɑːlfɪn/ (US)
- graph /ɡrɑːf/ (UK) or /ɡræf/ (US)
- photograph /ˈfəʊtəɡrɑːf/ (UK) and photographer /fəˈtɒɡrəfə/: the stress moves, but the PH stays F
