Calm Walter talked while tall Alan walked.
Seven words, and every one has an L in its spelling. You say the L in four of them, and you do not say it in the other three. That is the whole challenge.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- Said L /l/, as in Walter, while, tall and Alan. Touch the tip of your tongue to the ridge behind your top teeth, and let the sound flow around the sides.
- Silent L, as in calm, talked and walked. The L is written but never said. The words sound like KAHM, TAWKT and WAWKT.
- The vowel in talk, walk and tall /ɔː/. In most accents it is the same sound in all three, so only the ending changes: tall ends in L, and talk ends in K.
Quick test: say tall and then talk. In most accents the vowel stays the same. Only the last sound changes.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly. Say the L in Walter, while, tall and Alan, and keep it out of the other three.
Calm Walter talked
while tall Alan
walked.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
CALM WALter TALKED while TALL ALan WALKED.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Calm Walter talked while tall Alan walked.
If your tongue wants to say an L in calm, talked or walked, slow down for one round.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
The sentence plays a trick on your eyes.
- Seven words, four said Ls. Your eyes see an L in all seven, so your mouth has to decide each time whether to use it.
- The same spelling can go either way. Walter and walked both start wal-, but you say the L in one and not the other.
- Silent and said Ls sit side by side. Tall Alan has two said Ls in neighbouring words, and then walked follows with a silent one.
The spelling does not always show the sound, so check new words in a dictionary.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs show what the L does:
- talk / tall: the same vowel, and the L is said only in tall
- walk / wall: the same vowel, and the L is said only in wall
- calm / call: a different vowel, and the L is said only in call
