Bob's blue bike broke Brenda's brown broom.
Both blue and broke start with a B, but the second sound is different: L in one, R in the other. That small change is the whole challenge.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- BL /bl/, as in blue. The tongue tip touches the ridge behind the top teeth for the L.
- BR /br/, as in broke and brown and broom. The tongue tip pulls back for the R, and the lips round.
- Bob's /bɒbz/ in British English, /bɑːbz/ in American English. Both are fine.
Quick test: say lake, then rake. The L is made with the tongue tip touching the ridge, and the R is made with the tongue pulled back.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly. Keep the B the same and change only the second sound.
Bob's blue bike
broke
Brenda's brown broom.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
BOBS BLUE BIKE BROKE BRENda's BROWN BROOM.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Bob's blue bike broke Brenda's brown broom.
If the L and R swap places, slow down for one round.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
- The first letter is the same, the second is not. Six words start with B, but the second sound is either L or R, and your mouth has to switch each time.
- L and R are close but not the same. Many learners find them hard to tell apart, especially if their first language doesn't separate them.
- Speed hides the difference. At speed, BL and BR can merge into one sound, which is why the sentence is useful practice.
👀 Words to Notice
- blink / brink
- bleed / breed
- blown / brown
- blight / bright
