Black background, brown background.
Four words, and every one starts with B. In the first word of each half, the second sound is L or R, and swapping them changes the word.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- BL /bl/, as in black and blue. Press your lips for B, then touch the tip of your tongue to the ridge behind your top teeth for L.
- BR /br/, as in brown and brave. Press your lips for B, then pull your tongue back for R. The tip does not touch anything.
- ACK /æk/, as in black and back. An open sound, then a quick K at the end.
Quick test: say blue, then brew. The only difference is the L or the R.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly.
Black background,
brown background.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
BLACK BACKground, BROWN BACKground.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Black background, brown background.
If it falls apart, that is normal. Slow down and try again. Take BL and BR one at a time before you speed up.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
L and R are neighbours in the mouth, and learners swap them often.
black / brown
- The tongue touches for L and does not touch for R. In one breath, the tongue has to switch from touching to not touching.
- Background repeats twice, so the tongue must also say back and ground twice without losing the rhythm.
- Both clusters start with B, so the lips are ready for B each time, but the second sound has to change.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs change when you swap L and R:
- blue / brew
- blush / brush
- blink / brink
- bland / brand
- blade / braid
Say each pair slowly. Feel the tongue touch for L, and stay back for R.
🏆 OddLingo Challenge
- Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
- Round 2: say the whole twister once at normal speed.
- Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.
Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:
Brad's blue brush blushed over the black blocks.
