Half, Calm and Walk: Where Is the L?

Half, calm and walk all have an L that nobody says. The L was part of the old spelling, and it stayed on the page after it left the mouth.

The L in half, calm and walk is silent. Each word has an L in its spelling that is not said today.

First, how do you pronounce them?

half: HAF (some accents say HAHF)
calm: KAHM (rhymes with palm)
walk: WAWK (rhymes with talk)

There is no L sound in any of them.

The weird part

Look at the letters: H-A-L-F, C-A-L-M, W-A-L-K. Your eyes see an L in the middle of each, and your ears hear nothing.

spelling: half, calm, walk
sound: haf, kahm, wawk

Notice the pattern. In all three words, the L comes right after an A and right before another consonant (F, M, K). Many other words follow the same pattern: calf, palm, talk, chalk.

Where do they come from?

Half goes back to Old English healf and halb, meaning "side" or "part". Both spellings had an L.

Walk also goes back to Old English, from wealcan. But the old word did not mean "go on foot". It meant to roll or toss, and it was used for treading cloth in water to make it thicker. Over many years, the word slowly came to mean moving around on foot.

Calm is different. It probably came from Italian calma, and before that from a Latin and Greek word for the heat of the midday sun. Etymonline says its spelling was influenced by the Latin word calere, "to be hot". So a word that once belonged to a hot, still day now means being peaceful.

Today none of the three is said with an L, but the spelling still has it.

📌 Good to know

The same thing happens in the L in "salmon" and the L in "could", but the stories are different. Silent letters often have different reasons.

Not every L is silent, so check new words in a dictionary. In milk, help and golf, you do say the L.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Don't say the L.
❌ HAL-f, KAL-m, WAL-k
✅ HAF, KAHM, WAWK

Spelling by sound.
❌ haf, cam, wauk
✅ half, calm, walk

Cam is a real word, but it is not calm.

💬 In a Conversation

Sam: I want to walk half a mile.
Mia: Stay calm. It is only half.
Sam: Where is the L in all of those?
Mia: Hiding.
Sam: In which word?
Mia: All three. Very calm of them.
