Why Is There an L in "Salmon"?

The L in salmon is silent because it was added back to the spelling in the 1500s, to match the word's Latin ancestor.

The L in salmon is silent because it was added back to the spelling in the 1500s, to match the Latin word the English word came from.

First, how do you pronounce it?

SAM-un

It starts like the name Sam, and the end is a short un. There is no L sound.

The weird part

Look at the letters: S-A-L-M-O-N. Your mouth says sam-un, and your eyes see an L in the middle.

spelling: salmon
sound: sammon

Where does "salmon" come from?

The word came into English in the early 1200s as samoun, from French. And there was no L in it. People wrote what they said.

But the French word came from the Latin word salmo, and that did have an L. In Old English, the fish was called something else entirely: leax. Then the French word took over.

So where did the L come from?

In the 1500s, English scholars were very interested in Latin. They wanted English words to look like their Latin ancestors. So they put the L back into the spelling.

People kept saying sam-un, but the written word had changed. The L stayed on the page, and English never started saying it.

It is the same trick that gave us the B in "doubt". A letter was added to look more like Latin, and nobody ever pronounced it.

📌 Good to know

🥡 The OddLingo Takeaway

A silent letter doesn't always mean a sound went missing. Sometimes it was added by people who wanted a word to look like its ancestors.

The L in salmon was invented by the spelling, not by the speakers.
