Five Vans, Very Fine: An F and V Tongue Twister

Five vans fell off the very fine ferry. Practise the F and V sounds, which are made in the same place and differ only in voice.

Five vans fell off the very fine ferry.

F and V are a pair of voiced and unvoiced sounds made in exactly the same place. Your top teeth touch your bottom lip, and the air escapes. The only difference is whether your voice is on.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • F /f/, as in fell, off, fine, ferry. Rest your top teeth on your bottom lip and push air through. Your throat stays quiet, so it is a hiss with no buzz.
  • V /v/, as in vans, very, five. Make the same lip and teeth position, but switch your voice on. Put a hand on your throat: you should feel a buzz.

Quick test: say fff and then vvv. Keep the lips still and switch the buzz on and off. That buzz is the whole difference.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly. Feel the buzz on the V words and the hiss on the F words.

Five vans
fell off
the very fine ferry.

Now say the two halves: Five vans fell off … the very fine ferry.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say the whole sentence at a natural speed, as if you were telling a story about a ferry trip:

FIVE VANS FELL OFF the VEry FINE FERry.

Keep the F and V clearly different: the F is a quiet hiss, and the V buzzes.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Ready? Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

Five vans fell off the very fine ferry.

If the F and V blur, slow down for one round and check the buzz on each one.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

F and V are almost twins, so your mouth has very little to do. Your ear and your throat have to do all the work.

  • The lips and teeth stay in the same position. Only the voice changes.
  • In five vans and fell off, the voice switches from buzz to hiss in a fraction of a second.
  • Under pressure, the buzz goes missing, and vans becomes fans. Or the buzz sneaks into F, and fine becomes vine.

Practise the buzz as a separate skill. Once you can hear it, the rest follows.

👀 Words to Notice

These pairs change meaning when you swap F and V:

  • fine / vine
  • fan / van
  • ferry / very
  • leaf / leave
  • file / vile

Try each pair slowly, then quickly: fine, vine, fine, vine.

🏆 OddLingo Challenge

  1. Round 1: say it slowly, with a buzz on every V and none on every F.
  2. Round 2: say the whole sentence once at normal speed.
  3. Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.

Bonus round: swap in a pair from Words to Notice. For example: Five vans leave the very fine ferry.
