Victor's Blue Van: A B and V Tongue Twister

Victor's blue van is a twister that switches between B and V, two sounds that differ in how your lips and teeth meet.

Victor's brave blue van vanished by the bay.

Eight words, and they swap between B and V. A tiny change in your mouth turns best into vest.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • B /b/, as in brave, blue, by and bay. Press both lips together, then let them pop open with a puff of air.
  • V /v/, as in Victor's, van and vanished. Rest your top teeth lightly on your bottom lip and let a buzzing sound pass through.

Quick test: say ban, then van. For B, the lips touch. For V, the teeth touch the lip.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly.

Victor's brave
blue van
vanished
by the bay.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:

VICtor's BRAVE BLUE VAN VANished by the BAY.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

Victor's brave blue van vanished by the bay.

If your B and V swap, slow down. Check your lips for B and your teeth for V.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

The words keep switching between two sounds that look alike in the mouth.

Brave blue / Victor's van

  • B uses both lips and a pop. V uses teeth and a buzz.
  • The two sounds are in the same part of the mouth, so it is easy to slide from one to the other.
  • In blue van, a B sound is followed straight away by a V sound.

Many languages have only one of these sounds, so learners often find the pair tricky. Even for English speakers, a fast twister makes them mix.

👀 Words to Notice

These pairs differ by only one sound, B or V:

  • ban / van
  • best / vest
  • berry / very
  • boat / vote
  • bat / vat

Swap the first sound, and the word changes.

🏆 OddLingo Challenge

  1. Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
  2. Round 2: say the whole twister once at normal speed.
  3. Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.

Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:

Barbara's brave vet vanished before Victor's blue bus.

🧐 Did You Know?

In Spanish, the letters b and v stand for the same sounds. Which sound you hear depends on the neighbouring sounds, not on the letter. That is why Spanish speakers who learn English often need extra practice to keep best and vest apart.
