Flora's Flat Flute: An FL Tongue Twister

Flora's flat flute floats past the flags. Practise the FL cluster, where the lips make an F and the tongue jumps straight to L.

Flora's flat flute floats past the flags.

Almost every content word here starts with FL. The F is made with the lips and teeth, and then the tongue has to leave that position and land on the ridge for the L, all in one smooth move.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • F /f/, as in Flora's, flat, flute, floats, flags. Rest your top teeth on your bottom lip and push air out.
  • L /l/, as in flat, flute, floats, flags. Lift your tongue to the ridge behind your top teeth, and let the air flow around its sides.

Quick test: say f and then fl. Feel your tongue leave your lip and jump up for the L. That jump is what this cluster trains.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly. Let the F come first, then bring the tongue up for the L.

Flora's flat flute
floats
past the flags.

Now say the two halves: Flora's flat flute floats … past the flags.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say the whole sentence at a natural speed, as if you were describing a parade:

FLOR-ahs FLAT FLUTE FLOATS past the FLAGS.

Keep the F and L together, so the L follows straight after the F.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Ready? Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

Flora's flat flute floats past the flags.

If the L goes missing, slow down for one round and make sure the tongue reaches the ridge.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

FL joins two very different sounds: a lip-and-teeth hiss, and a tongue-tip sound.

  • F uses the lips and teeth, and the air hisses. L uses the tongue, and the air flows around the sides.
  • In flat flute, the tongue has to leave the lip position and land on the ridge almost instantly.
  • When you rush, the L drops out, and flat sounds like fat. Or the F gets lost, and flags sounds like lags.

Think of the F as the start of a move, and the L as the landing.

👀 Words to Notice

These pairs show what happens when the L is missing or added:

  • flip / lip
  • flow / low
  • flock / lock
  • flag / lag

Try each pair slowly, then quickly: flip, lip, flip, lip.

🏆 OddLingo Challenge

  1. Round 1: say it slowly, with the F and L clearly joined.
  2. Round 2: say the whole sentence once at normal speed.
  3. Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.

Bonus round: make a new sentence with four FL words: Flo flies a flying flag.
