Dan's dog dug a deep ditch beside Drew's driveway.
Some words start with D alone, like Dan's, dog and dug. Others start with DR, like Drew's and driveway. The R has to appear in just the right places.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- D /d/, as in Dan's, dog, dug, deep and ditch. Touch the tongue tip to the ridge behind the top teeth and release.
- DR /dr/, as in Drew's and driveway. Make the D, then pull the tongue back for the R.
Quick test: say day, then dray. The R in the second word is the only difference.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly. Keep the D clear, and add the R only where it is spelled.
Dan's dog dug a
deep ditch beside
Drew's driveway.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
DANS DOG DUG a DEEP DITCH beSIDE DREWS DRIVEway.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Dan's dog dug a deep ditch beside Drew's driveway.
If Drew's turns into Dew's or driveway into dive way, slow down for one round.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
- Some D words take an R, some don't. Your mouth has to decide each time.
- The R pulls the tongue back. After a D, the tongue has to move back quickly, and speed makes that harder.
- Some speakers add a slight "j" before the R. After a D, many speakers make the sound a little like jr. That is normal, so do not worry if driveway sounds a bit like that.
- Names and common words mix together. Dan, Drew, dog and driveway all sit in one sentence.
👀 Words to Notice
- dip / drip
- dive / drive
- dye / dry
