Eight Knights Ate: A Silent GH Tongue Twister

Eight knights ate a light bite at night uses homophones and the silent GH, so the spelling says one thing and the mouth says another.

Eight knights ate a light bite at night.

Eight is said the same as ate, knights the same as nights, and the GH in light and night is silent. The sentence tests whether your ears trust the sound or the spelling.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • Eight and ate /eɪt/. The GH is silent.
  • Knights and nights /naɪts/. The K is silent.
  • Light and night /laɪt/ and /naɪt/. The GH is silent.
  • Bite /baɪt/. The final E is silent, and the vowel is a diphthong.

Quick test: say eight, then ate. In most accents they sound identical.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly. Be careful about the silent letters.

Eight knights
ate a light bite
at night.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:

EIGHT NIGHTS ATE a LIGHT BITE at NIGHT.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

Eight knights ate a light bite at night.

If you add a rough throat sound to light or night, slow down for one round.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

  • Homophones hide in plain sight. Eight and ate look different but sound the same, so you can't rely on the spelling.
  • Silent letters at the start and in the middle. The K in knights and the GH in light and night are not said, so your eyes and mouth disagree.
  • Long vowels that sound the same. Bite, light and night all use the same vowel, so the sentence repeats the sound.

👀 Words to Notice

  • height /haɪt/: spelled like eight, but the vowel is different
  • neighbour /ˈneɪbə/ (UK) or /ˈneɪbər/ (US): the GH is silent
  • weigh /weɪ/: sounds like way, with the GH silent
  • sight /saɪt/: the same ending as light

🏆 OddLingo Challenge

  2. Round 2: say the whole sentence once at normal speed.
  3. Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.

Bonus round: try this one:

My neighbour weighed eight bright lights at night.
