Quarantine: A Word That Means Forty

Quarantine means keeping someone or something apart from others so illness can't spread. The word comes from the Italian for "forty days".

Quarantine means keeping a person, an animal or a thing apart from others for a while, so that an illness or a pest can't spread. The word comes from an Italian phrase meaning "forty days".

What Does Quarantine Mean?

If you put something in quarantine, you keep it separate until it's safe. Doctors do it for people, farmers do it for animals, and airports do it for plants and pets arriving from far away.

The new fish spent a week in quarantine before they met the others.

It's also a verb: you can quarantine something. And in a joke, you can quarantine anything you want to keep away from everyone else, like a very smelly gym bag.

Here's the odd part: today a quarantine does not last forty days. It lasts as long as it needs to. The number only survives in the word.

🔊 Pronunciation

KWOR-un-teen

The stress is on the first part. It starts like the word quarter: KWOR. The end sounds like the word teen.

Mia: Good. My gym bag needs about forty years.

🕵️ Where Does It Come From?

English took quarantine from the Italian phrase quaranta giorni, which means "forty days".

The idea began in 1377 in the city of Ragusa (today's Dubrovnik, in Croatia). A serious illness was spreading, so visitors from affected places had to wait thirty days before they were allowed in. That wait was called a trentino, from the Italian word for "thirty".

Over the next few decades, similar rules in other cities stretched to forty days, and the name followed. Nobody knows for sure why thirty became forty.

So the word remembers a number that nobody needs to count any more.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Whenever you hear quarantine, hear quaranta. That's the Italian word for forty.

Then remember the ending of the story: the number stayed in the word, but the rule moved on. A quarantine is over when it's safe, not when someone has counted to forty.
