Quick Quiet Quacks: A KW Tongue Twister

Quick quiet ducks quack quietly uses the KW sound spelled qu, with three different vowels after it.

Quick quiet ducks quack quietly.

Five words, and four of them start with qu. The sounds that follow it keep changing.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • KW /kw/, as in quick, quiet, quack and quietly. The qu spelling stands for K followed by W. Start with the back of your tongue up, then round your lips.
  • Short I /ɪ/, as in quick.
  • Short A /æ/, as in quack.
  • Long I /aɪ/, as in quiet, which has two parts: kwy-et.

Quick test: say quick, quack, then quiet. The start stays the same, but the vowel changes each time.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly.

Quick quiet
ducks quack
quietly.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:

QUICK QUIet DUCKS QUACK QUIet-ly.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

Quick quiet ducks quack quietly.

If the sounds blur, slow down. Say K, then W, then the vowel.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

All four qu words start the same way and then split into different vowels.

quick / quiet / quack / quietly

  • Quick has a short I, quack has a short A, and quiet has a long I plus a second part.
  • Quiet has two parts (kwy-et), while quick and quack have one.
  • Ducks quack has K sounds close together, at the end of ducks and the start of quack.

The start is easy, but you must change the vowel every time.

👀 Words to Notice

These pairs are close but different:

  • quite / quiet
  • quick / quack
  • quit / quiet
  • quack / whack

People often mix up quite and quiet. Quite has one part, and quiet has two.

🏆 OddLingo Challenge

  1. Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
  2. Round 2: say the whole twister once at normal speed.
  3. Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.

Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:

Quentin quietly queued for quick quizzes.

🧐 Did You Know?

In Old English, the word for queen was written cwen. The sounds K and W were the same, but the spelling was different. Today we use qu for that K and W sound.
