Nine Nice Night Nurses: An N and Long I Tongue Twister

Nine nice night nurses nursed nine nervous knights packs N sounds and the long I vowel into one twister, with a silent K to keep you guessing.

Nine nice night nurses nursed nine nervous knights.

Eight words start with N, and the twist is that several of them share the same vowel but end with different sounds.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • N /n/, as in nine, nice, night, nurses, nursed and nervous. The tip of your tongue touches the ridge behind your top teeth and the sound comes through your nose.
  • Long I /aɪ/, as in nine, nice, night and knights. Start with your mouth open like ah, then slide towards ee.
  • Silent K in knights. The K is written but not said, so knights starts with the same N as nine.

Quick test: say night, then knight. They sound exactly the same.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly.

Nine nice
night nurses
nursed nine
nervous knights.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:

NINE NICE NIGHT NURSes NURSED NINE NERvous KNIGHTS.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

Nine nice night nurses nursed nine nervous knights.

If it falls apart, that is normal. Slow down and try again. Keep the N clear and the vowel long.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

The mouth has one place to be, and the twister never lets it leave.

Nine nice night nurses

  • Nearly every word starts with the same N, so your tongue stays in one place.
  • Nine, nice and night use the same vowel but end with different sounds: N, S and T. The mouth has to change only at the end.
  • Nurses and nursed use a different vowel (the ur in her), so the vowels switch between long I and ur.
  • The silent K in knights means the last word starts with an N sound, even though it begins with K.

👀 Words to Notice

These pairs show how a small change turns a word into something else:

  • nine / mine
  • nice / mice
  • night / might
  • nurse / purse
  • night / knight: the same sound, with a different spelling and a different meaning.

Say each pair slowly. The last pair sounds exactly the same.

🏆 OddLingo Challenge

  1. Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
  2. Round 2: say the whole twister once at normal speed.
  3. Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.

Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:

Nick's nice neighbour nibbled nine noodles at night.

🧐 Did You Know?

Long ago, English speakers said the K and the GH in knight. The sounds faded, but the spelling stayed, which is why the word is spelled so differently from how it sounds.
