Seth sells thick socks.
Only four words, but S and TH keep meeting. Swap one and thick turns into sick.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- S /s/, as in Seth, sells and socks. A thin hiss with the tongue behind your teeth.
- TH /θ/, as in Seth (the end) and thick. The tip of your tongue is between your teeth and you blow air. There is no buzz.
- CK /k/, as in thick and socks. A quick pop at the back of the mouth.
Quick test: say sick, then thick. For S the tongue stays behind the teeth. For TH it comes out.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly.
Seth sells
thick socks.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
SETH SELLS THICK SOCKS.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Seth sells thick socks.
If it falls apart, that is normal. Slow down and try again. Let your tongue come out for TH, then pull it back for S.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
S and TH are made in nearly the same place, but the tongue has to move forward and back.
Seth sells / thick socks
- Seth ends with TH, and sells starts with S, so the tongue goes forward, then straight back.
- Then thick begins with TH again, followed by socks with S, so the pattern repeats.
- Many learners say S for TH, so thick sounds like sick. The twister catches that slip every time.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs change when TH becomes S:
- sick / thick
- sink / think
- sank / thank
- sing / thing
- sought / thought
Say each pair slowly. Show your tongue for TH.
🏆 OddLingo Challenge
- Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
- Round 2: say the whole twister once at normal speed.
- Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.
Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:
Seth thinks the thick socks sank.
