Pearl's Early Bird: An ER Tongue Twister

Pearl's early bird heard the third word repeats one vowel sound spelled three different ways, ear, ir and or, all in one short sentence.

Pearl's early bird heard the third word.

The ER sound is one of the most common in English, and it is spelled in many ways. This twister puts three of them side by side: ear in pearl and early, ir in bird and third, and or in word. Your eyes see three different vowels. Your mouth should make one sound.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • ER /ɜː/ in British English, as in pearl, early, heard, bird, third and word. Your tongue sits in the middle of your mouth, and your lips are relaxed. Say it as one long vowel, without an R sound at the end.
  • TH /θ/, as in third. The tongue tip comes out between your teeth.
  • R in the spelling of bird and word. Many American accents say it, while many British accents do not, so listen to your teacher.

Quick test: say pearl, bird and word one after another. The vowel sound is the same. Only the spelling changes.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly.

Pearl's early
bird heard
the third word.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:

PEARL'S ER-ly BIRD HEARD the THIRD WORD.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

Pearl's early bird heard the third word.

If the vowel starts to sound different each time, slow down and keep the same mouth shape for every ER word.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

Look at the vowel in each word:

pearl / early / heard / bird / third / word

The vowel sound is the same every time. The spelling is not.

  • Your eyes see ear, ir and or, and expect three different sounds. Your mouth needs one.
  • Pearl's early puts two ER words side by side, so the vowel is repeated quickly.
  • Third ends with a D, and the next word starts with a W. Your tongue has to move from the vowel to the D, then straight on to the W.

👀 Words to Notice

These words share the same vowel sound, with different spellings:

  • earn / urn / adjourn: the ER sound, with three spellings
  • fern / turn / worm: the same vowel, with three more spellings
  • heard / bird: two spellings, one sound

🏆 OddLingo Challenge

  1. Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
  2. Round 2: say the whole sentence once at normal speed.
  3. Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.

Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:

Early birds search for worms in the curled, twirling turf.

🧐 Did You Know?

English writes the ER sound in many ways: ear, ir, er, or and ur all appear in common words. There is no single rule that tells you which to use, so you learn each word. The Great Grey Geese shows the same problem with the long A. See The Great Grey Geese for the long A version of the same idea.
