Eight great grey geese ate eight crates of grapes.
Seven of the nine words share one vowel sound, the long A. But English spells it in different ways, so your eyes see a different word each time. Add the GR sound at the start of several words, and your tongue has plenty to do.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- Long A /eɪ/, as in eight, great, grey, ate, crates and grapes. Start with your mouth open a little, then glide to a smile.
- GR /ɡr/, as in great, grey and grapes. The back of your tongue lifts for G, then pulls back for R.
- Hard G /ɡ/, as in geese. It is a G like go, not like giant.
- CR /kr/, as in crates. It is the same move as GR, but with no buzz in your throat.
Quick test: say grate and then crate. Only the first sound changes, and the buzz in your throat is the difference.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly.
Eight great
grey geese
ate eight
crates of grapes.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
EIGHT GREAT GREY GEESE ATE EIGHT CRATES of GRAPES.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Eight great grey geese ate eight crates of grapes.
If the long A starts to blur, slow down for one round and let each vowel glide fully. Then speed up again.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
Look at the vowel in each word:
eight / great / grey / ate / eight / crates / grapes
The sound is the same every time. The spelling is not.
- Your eyes see ei, ea, ey and a-e, and expect different sounds. Your mouth needs the same one.
- The consonants jump around: G, GR, CR. The tongue changes position, but the vowel will not change with it.
- Ate eight puts two long A sounds side by side. There is no consonant between them to give your tongue a rest.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs show how little it takes to change a word:
- grate / crate: G against K
- grape / drape: GR against DR
- eight / ate: the same sound, two spellings
- great / grate: the same sound, two spellings
🏆 OddLingo Challenge
- Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
- Round 2: say the whole sentence once at normal speed.
- Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.
Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:
Kate and Jake ate eight great steaks at eight.
🧐 Did You Know?
English has many ways to spell the long A sound: cake, rain, day, vein, eight, grey, great. Even the colour has two spellings. Grey is more common in British English, and gray is more common in American English. Both are correct.
