Eleven elegant elephants entered every evening.
Six words, and every one of them starts with the letter E. That sounds easy, but the E is said three slightly different ways.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- Short E /ɛ/, as in elegant, elephants, entered and every. Keep your mouth half open.
- Short I /ɪ/, the first sound of eleven. It is quick and quiet.
- Long E /iː/, the first sound of evening. Smile and say ee.
- L /l/, as in eleven, elegant and elephants. The tip of your tongue touches the ridge behind your top teeth.
- V /v/, as in eleven, every and evening. Top teeth on your bottom lip, with a buzz.
- N /n/, as in eleven, entered and evening. The tongue stays at the same ridge as L, and the sound goes through your nose.
Quick test: say L, then N. Your tongue is in the same place. For N, the air goes through the nose.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly.
Eleven
elegant
elephants
entered
every evening.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
i-LEV-en EL-e-gant EL-e-phants EN-tered EV-ry EEV-ning.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Eleven elegant elephants entered every evening.
If the words blur, slow down and say each starting E clearly before the next sound.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
Every word begins with the letter E, so your mouth has little to help it find the way.
eleven elegant elephants entered every evening
- Eleven, elegant and elephants start in nearly the same way, so they are easy to mix up.
- The E is said three ways: short E, quick I and long E. Your mouth has to keep switching.
- L, V and N move in the same small part of your mouth.
- The ending of one word leads straight to the next, with only a tiny change.
It is like walking on stepping stones that all look the same.
👀 Words to Notice
These words look and sound alike:
- elegant / elephant
- eleven / seven
- evening / even
- entered / enter
Notice that ph in elephants sounds like f.
🏆 OddLingo Challenge
- Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
- Round 2: say the whole twister once at normal speed.
- Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.
Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:
Seven elderly elves enjoyed eleven eggs every evening.
🧐 Did You Know?
The word eleven comes from Old English words that mean "one left" over ten. Twelve follows the same idea and means "two left". Numbers after twelve use -teen instead.
