Greg's grey goat gulped Kate's cold cocoa.
Seven words, and they swap between G and K. Swap one sound and goat turns into coat.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- G /g/, as in Greg's, grey, goat and gulped. The back of your tongue touches the roof of your mouth, then lets go, and your throat buzzes.
- K /k/, as in Kate's, cold and cocoa. The tongue does exactly the same thing, but there is no buzz.
Quick test: put a finger on your throat and say goat, then coat. For goat you feel a buzz. For coat you do not.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly.
Greg's grey goat
gulped
Kate's cold cocoa.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
GREG'S GREY GOAT GULPED KATE'S COLD COcoa.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Greg's grey goat gulped Kate's cold cocoa.
If it falls apart, that is normal. Slow down and try again. Feel the buzz for G, and keep it quiet for K.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
G and K are twins, because the tongue makes them in the same place:
Greg's grey goat / Kate's cold cocoa
- The tongue moves in the same way for both. The only difference is whether the voice is on.
- The twister keeps switching between the buzzing G and the silent K, so your throat has to turn on and off.
- The letter c in cold and cocoa says K, so the spelling does not warn you.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs change the word with nothing but G or K:
- goat / coat
- gold / cold
- gap / cap
- gum / come
- gate / Kate
Say each pair slowly, then quickly. Feel your throat for the first word.
🏆 OddLingo Challenge
- Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
- Round 2: say the whole twister once at normal speed.
- Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.
Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:
Greg got Kate's gold cap, then Kate got Greg's cold cup.
