How can a clam cram in a clean cream can?
This one is a question, and it keeps swapping L and R. Slip, and clam becomes cram.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- K /k/, as in can, clam, cram, clean and cream. The back of your tongue touches the roof of your mouth and lets go.
- L /l/, in clam and clean. The tip of your tongue touches the ridge behind the top teeth.
- R /r/, in cram and cream. The tongue pulls back and does not touch anything.
Quick test: say clam, then cram. Feel where the tongue tip goes.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly.

cram in a
clean cream can?
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
How can a clam cram in a clean cream can?
If it falls apart, that is normal. Slow down and try again. Keep the L at the front, and the R at the back.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
The tongue has to move from front to back, and then front again, all in one short question.
clam / cram / clean / cream
- Clam and cram differ by one sound. Clean and cream differ by two: L against R, and N against M.
- Many words end in a nasal sound, either M or N, and the mouth has to switch between them.
- Can appears twice, as a helper word at the start and a noun at the end.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs change when L becomes R:
- clam / cram
- clown / crown
- clue / crew
- clash / crash
Say each pair slowly. Touch the ridge for L, and leave it alone for R.
