Light Up: A Lantern and a Face

Light up means to become bright or to make something bright, and it also means to show happiness, as when a face lights up.

What Does Light Up Mean?

Light up has two main meanings, and they are connected.

1. To become bright, or to make something bright.

The fireworks lit up the sky.
The lantern lights up when you press the button.

2. To show happiness or excitement, especially in your eyes or on your face.

Her face lit up when she saw the cake.
His eyes light up whenever someone says "football".

In both meanings, something goes from dull to bright. In the second one, it is a person's face that has a lamp inside.

(There is a third, informal meaning of light up, but it is not one for this page.)

🗣️ Natural Examples

The street lamps lit up one by one at dusk.
The fairy lights lit the whole garden up.
When the teacher said "no homework", the whole class lit up.
Switch the torch on and light the path up.
The little boy's face lit up at the sight of his new bike.
Mum lit the room up with a hundred little paper lanterns.

✂️ Can You Separate It?

Light up is separable when it has an object: you can put the object in the middle or after up.

Noun object, both ways are fine.
✅ The lamps lit up the garden.
✅ The lamps lit the garden up.

Pronoun object, it must go in the middle.
✅ The lamps lit it up.
❌ The lamps lit up it.

When there is no object, light up simply stays together: Her face lit up.

🛠️ How to Use It

  • The past form is lit up (also lighted up, but lit up is more common): The sky lit up.
  • With a person's face or eyes, light up has no object: his eyes lit up.
  • When something makes a face bright, you can use an object: The news lit his face up.
  • It can be followed by with: The room lit up with colour.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

A pronoun goes in the middle.
❌ The fireworks lit up it.
✅ The fireworks lit it up.

Do not mix it up with lighten up.
❌ The fireworks lightened up the sky.
✅ The fireworks lit up the sky.

Lighten up is a different phrase: it means "relax and stop being so serious".

💬 In a Conversation

Sam: Why did your face light up just now?
Mia: My brother said we are having pancakes.
Sam: I think the whole kitchen lit up.
Mia: It is a very bright pancake.
Sam: Now it is your fault that I am hungry.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Imagine a face with a little lamp inside. When something wonderful happens, the lamp switches on.

That is the same idea as a street lamp: before, it was dark; after, it is bright. Light up is just the lamp switching on, on a lantern or on a face.

👯 Similar Expressions

  • Turn on: switch a light or a machine on. A lamp can turn on or light up, but you turn on the switch.
  • Show off: a different kind of shining. You show off when you want everyone to look at you.
  • Dress up: put on special clothes for fun. A costume party can light up a hall, and people dress up to be in it.
