What Do Turn On and Turn Off Mean?
Turn on means to start something, like a light, a machine or the water. Turn off means to stop it. They are opposites, and so are the small words: on and off.
Please turn on the light.
Please turn off the TV.
You can turn on a lamp with a button, and a phone with a touch. We hardly turn anything now, but the old verb stayed.

✂️ Can You Separate Them?

Watch out for a different meaning. Turn on can also mean suddenly attack or angrily blame someone. Then it is not separable, and the person comes straight after.

Turn off has a second job as well. When it means leave a road, it is not separable: the bus turned off the main road.

💡 The OddLingo Trick
Make a sandwich. Turn is the top bread, on is the bottom bread, and the pronoun is the cheese in the middle.
Turn it on. Turn it off. The cheese never goes outside the bread.
Another picture: on means connected and ready, and off means away and resting.
