Go On: Keep Going, or What Is Happening?

Go on can mean continue, happen, or a friendly push to try something, and the words around it show which one is meant.

What Does Go On Mean?

Go on has three everyday meanings, and all of them are very common.

  1. Continue: keep doing something, or keep happening.
  2. Happen: be taking place. This is the What's going on? meaning.
  3. A friendly push: Go on! means please do it or I believe you can.

The rain went on all day.
What is going on in the garden?

So What's going on? is not a question about a trip. It means What is happening?

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Think of a long road. You are not travelling to a place. You are just going, and the road keeps on going.

  • Something keeps moving along the road? That is continue.
  • A lot of things are moving along the road right now? That is happen.
