Pass Out: Does the Teacher Want You to Faint?

Pass out can mean faint or hand out, and one clue decides: faint has no object after it, while hand out does.

What Does Pass Out Mean?

Pass out has two common meanings that have nothing to do with each other.

  1. Faint: suddenly become unconscious for a short time.
  2. Hand out: give something to each person in a group.

Sam nearly passed out in the hot sun.
Mrs Lee passed out the worksheets.

So when a teacher says "Please pass out the papers", she does not want you to fall over. She wants you to hand them round.

🗣️ Natural Examples

Faint:

Sam stood in the hot sun for too long and nearly passed out.
Dad says he will pass out if the dog eats another shoe.
The runner felt dizzy and sat down before she passed out.

Hand out:

Mrs Lee passed out the worksheets.
Can you pass these books out, please?
The band passed out free stickers at the door.
She passed them out before the bell.

✂️ Can You Separate It?

It depends on the meaning, and that gives you a clever clue.

  • Faint: not separable, and nothing comes after it. You just pass out.
  • Hand out: separable, because there is something to hand out. The thing can go in the middle or after, and a pronoun goes in the middle.

✅ Mrs Lee passed out the worksheets.
✅ Mrs Lee passed the worksheets out.
✅ Mrs Lee passed them out.
❌ Mrs Lee passed out them.

Clue: is there a thing after it that people receive? Then it means hand out. Nothing after it? Then it means faint.

🛠️ How to Use It

  • Past tense: passed out.
  • Faint: pass out from the heat, nearly pass out. It is informal. Many people also say faint.
  • Hand out: pass out leaflets, tickets, sweets. Hand out and give out mean nearly the same.
  • Joke use: people sometimes say I'll pass out! when they are very surprised or very tired. It is an exaggeration.

Mrs Lee: You get the last one.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Look at what comes after it.

  • Something follows? Papers travel from hand to hand. That is hand out.
  • Nothing follows? One person drops to the floor. That is faint.

No object, no papers.

👯 Similar Expressions
