The B in climb, comb and thumb is silent: after an M at the end of a word, English writes a B that nobody says.
In climb, comb and thumb the B is silent: after an M at the end of a word, English writes a B that nobody says.
First, how do you pronounce them?
climb: KLYM (rhymes with time)
comb: KOHM (rhymes with home)
thumb: THUM (rhymes with drum)
There is no B sound in any of them.
The weird part
Look at the letters: C-L-I-M-B, C-O-M-B, T-H-U-M-B. Your eyes see a B at the end of each word, and your ears hear nothing.
spelling: climb, comb, thumb
sound: klym, kohm, thum
Notice the pattern. Each word ends in -MB, and only the M is said. Many other words follow it: lamb, limb, crumb, numb, plumb, tomb.
🗣️ Natural Examples
The cat can climb the tallest tree.
Mia lost her comb at the beach.
Dad gave me a thumbs-up.
A little lamb followed the farmer.
One last crumb is left on the plate.
The icy water made my fingers numb.
A pattern, with a twist
At the end of a word, -MB is almost always said as just M. But in the middle of a word, the B often comes back: number, member, December, timber.
Some words carry the silence along. You still do not say the B in climber, plumber or thumbs. And sometimes it reappears: crumb has a silent B, but crumble says it.
So this is a pattern, not a law.
Where do they come from?
The B has more than one story.
Thumb goes back to Old English þūma, which had no B at all. The B first shows up in the spelling in the late 1100s. A dictionary calls it an unetymological spelling, meaning it was added for no old reason. It may have copied other words that ended in -mb.
Limb has the same kind of story. Old English lim had no B. The B began to appear in the late 1500s, again with no historical reason.
Climb is different. Old English climban did have a B. Dutch and German dropped it long ago (klimmen), but English kept the B in the spelling.
So some silent Bs are leftovers, and some were simply added by spelling.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
Don't say the B.
❌ clim-b, com-b, thum-b
✅ KLYM, KOHM, THUM
Keep the B when you write.
❌ clim, thum
✅ climb, thumb
Not every MB is silent.
❌ NUM-er
✅ NUM-ber
💬 In a Conversation

Mia: It is very good at hiding.
⏳ The OddLingo Timeline
Old English climban: with a B
Old English þūma ("thumb"): no B
↓ late 1100s: a B shows up in the spelling of thumb
↓ late 1500s: a B is added to limb
↓ today: the B is written, not said: climb, thumb, limb
🥡 The OddLingo Takeaway
At the end of a word, -MB is said as M. Write the B, but leave it out when you speak.
In the middle of a word, check first. Number and member do say the B.
Another silent letter that was added on purpose is in doubt. For more quiet letters, try the silent M and P.
