Busy, bury and build all have a U that is not said as a U, because the spelling came from one part of old England and the sound came from another.
First, how do you pronounce them?
busy: BIZ-ee (rhymes with Lizzy)
bury: BERR-ee (rhymes with berry)
build: BILD (rhymes with filled)
There is no "uh" or "oo" in any of them. The sound of the vowel is a short "i" in busy and build, and a short "e" in bury.
The weird part
Look at the letters: B-U-S-Y, B-U-R-Y, B-U-I-L-D. In many other words, U sounds like "uh" (bus, bun, bud) or like "oo" (rule, blue). Here it does neither.
spelling: busy, bury, build
sound: bizzy, berry, bild
Many learners guess "BUZ-ee" or "BYOO-ree". Those are natural guesses, but they are not how we say them.
The U and the sound: two dialects
In the Middle Ages, English had different dialects in different parts of the country. Words were said and spelled differently depending on where you lived. These three words ended up with a spelling from one region and a pronunciation from another.
- Bury: the spelling comes from the south-west of England, but the pronunciation comes from the south-east.
- Busy and build are told in a similar way: the U spelling came from one region, and the sound we say today came from another.
So the spelling and the sound travelled by different roads, and printing later fixed the spelling in place. That is why bury looks like it rhymes with jury (which it does not).

⏳ The OddLingo Timeline
Old English: byrgan, bysig, byldan
↓ the spelling of the south-west (with u) joins the sounds of other regions (i or e)
↓ printing fixes the spellings in place
↓ today: bury = BERR-ee, busy = BIZ-ee, build = BILD
🥡 The OddLingo Takeaway
The U in busy, bury and build is a spelling visitor. It is not a sound you say. Learn them as three small exceptions: BIZ-ee, BERR-ee, BILD.
For another case where a letter does not sound as you expect, try the silent U in guess, guard and guitar. For an unexpected sound in a common word, see one and wun.
