Pencil: It Started as a Little Brush

A pencil is a thin stick for writing and drawing, and the word first meant a fine paintbrush, not a writing stick at all.

What Does Pencil Mean?

A pencil is a thin tool for writing or drawing. It is usually a stick of wood with a thin core of graphite in the middle, and you can rub out the marks with an eraser.

Please bring a pencil and an eraser to the test.
Mia drew the map with a pencil first, then went over it with a pen.

🔊 Pronunciation

PEN-sul

The stress is on the first part: PEN. The c says s, as in city. It sounds like pen plus sul, but the end is very short and quiet.

pencil

🛠️ How to Use It

  • Pencil is a countable noun: a pencil, two pencils.
  • You write in pencil, with no a or the: Please fill in the form in pencil.
  • It can be an adjective before another noun: a pencil case, a pencil sketch, a pencil skirt.
  • It is also a verb: to pencil in a plan means to write it down in a way that can still be changed, because a pencil mark can be rubbed out. Let's pencil in Friday for the party.

🕵️ Where Does It Come From?

Pencil comes from the Latin word penicillus, which meant a painter's brush, and which can be read as "little tail". The brush looked like a tiny tail made of hair.

The word travelled through Old French and into English by the middle of the 1300s. At first, a pencil in English was a fine brush made of animal hair, used by painters and by people who decorated manuscripts.

Writing sticks came later. From the middle of the 1500s, people in England used sticks of graphite, which they called black lead, to make marks. The new tool did a job that used to belong to a small brush, and the old word pencil seems to have moved across to it.

That is why we still say "pencil lead" today, although there is no lead in it. It is also why a modern pencil, with graphite and clay, still shares its name with a paintbrush: the word was handed down from tool to tool. A pencil with an eraser fixed to the end was patented in 1858.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Think of a pencil as a little tail that learned to write.

The old paintbrush looked like a tiny tail. The new tool took over its name, but not its job.
