Mini Muffins: An M and N Tongue Twister

Many munching mice nibbled Nan's nine mini muffins swaps the M and N sounds, which are both made through your nose and differ only in the mouth.

Many munching mice nibbled Nan's nine mini muffins.

Mice and nice differ in only one sound. Swap the M and N by accident and you say a different word: mine becomes nine, and meat becomes neat.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • M /m/, as in many, munching and muffins. Close your lips, and let the sound hum out through your nose.
  • N /n/, as in Nan's, nine and nibbled. Keep your lips apart, touch the tip of your tongue to the ridge behind your top teeth, and hum through your nose.

Quick test: say mmm and then nnn while holding your nose gently. Both sounds stop. That is because the air goes out through your nose. Only your lips and tongue change.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly. Close your lips firmly for every M.

Many munching mice
nibbled Nan's
nine mini muffins.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:

MAny MUNCHing MICE NIBbled NAN'S NINE MIni MUFfins.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

Many munching mice nibbled Nan's nine mini muffins.

If your M turns into an N (or the other way), slow down for one round and check your lips.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

M and N are twins. Both are made through your nose, and both use your voice. The only difference is where your mouth closes.

  • For M, your lips close. For N, your lips stay open and your tongue tip rises. The sentence switches between the two again and again.
  • The sentence has five M words and three N words, in groups: many munching mice (M), nibbled Nan's nine (N), then mini muffins (M). Each time the group changes, your mouth has to switch.
  • At speed, you lose track. Muffins can come out as nuffins, and Nan's can come out as Man's.

👀 Words to Notice

These pairs change meaning when you swap M and N:

  • mice / nice
  • mine / nine
  • meat / neat
  • mail / nail

Also notice many /ˈmɛni/ and mini /ˈmɪni/. They sound almost alike, but the vowel is different.
