Speak Up

Speak up means to talk more loudly so people can hear you, or to say what you think instead of staying quiet.

What Does Speak Up Mean?

Speak up has two main jobs.

  1. Speak more loudly: so that other people can hear you.
  2. Say what you think: share an idea, a worry or an opinion instead of staying quiet.

Could you speak up, please? I can't hear you.
If something is wrong, speak up.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Think of up as a volume dial going up, and also as a hand going up in class.

A louder voice goes up, and a brave idea goes up so that everyone can see it.

👯 Similar Expressions

  • Turn Up: make the volume louder. Use it for a radio, not for a person.
  • Hold On: ask someone to wait while you think.
  • speak out: share a strong opinion publicly. It is more formal than speak up.
  • talk louder: the plain way to say the first meaning.

🎯 Test Your Skill

Up goes the volume.
