Good vs Well: One Word Has Two Jobs

Good describes things. Well describes how you do things, and it can also mean healthy. That double job is why the pair is so slippery.

Good describes a person or thing, and well describes how an action is done. But well has a second job too, which is where the trouble starts.

  • Good describes a noun: a good song, a good idea.
  • Well describes a verb: she sings well. It also means healthy: I don't feel well.

Good: describing things

Good answers the question "what kind of?" It describes a person, a place or a thing.

She is a good singer.
That was a good idea.
The soup smells good.

Well: describing actions, and health

Well answers the question "how?" It describes an action.

She sings well.
He plays the guitar well.
My team did well in the quiz.

Well is also the word for being healthy:

I don't feel well after all that cake.

Easy way to tell them apart

Ask yourself: is the word describing a thing, or how someone does something?

  • A thing (a song, an idea, a soup): use good.
  • How an action is done (sings, plays, works): use well.

Here is a quick test: if you can ask "how?", use well.

Feel good or feel well?

Both are fine. After feel, both good and well are accepted for being healthy. There is a small difference in feeling:

  • I feel good can mean good health, and it can also mean you are in good spirits.
  • I feel well leans towards good health.

✅ I feel good.
✅ I feel well.

📌 Good to Know

How are you doing? is a common question, and the careful answer in writing is "I'm doing well". You will often hear "I'm doing good" in speech and informal writing. It is very common, but in a school essay or a formal email, well is the safe choice.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Ask the question the word answers:
