Fun is about enjoying yourself, and funny is about what makes you laugh, or what seems strange.
- Fun means enjoyable: a fun game, a fun day.
- Funny means amusing, or odd: a funny joke, a funny smell.
Fun: enjoying yourself
Fun is the good feeling you get when you enjoy something. It can be a noun (have fun) or an adjective (a fun game).
We had fun at the beach.
That game was really fun.
Let's do something fun after school.
What fun!
Funny: laughs, and strange things
Funny has two jobs. It describes something that makes you laugh, and it describes something that seems strange.
The clown was funny.
My dad tells funny jokes.
This soup tastes funny.
That last one does not mean the soup is a comedian. It means the soup tastes odd.
Easy way to tell them apart
Ask yourself: am I enjoying it, or laughing at it?
- Enjoying it (a game, a trip, a party): use fun.
- Laughing at it (a joke, a clown, a cartoon): use funny.
- Puzzled by it (a strange smell, a weird noise): you may need funny, meaning odd.
📌 Good to Know
Funny has a second meaning that surprises learners: "strange". That's funny, my keys were here a minute ago means "that's odd", not "that's hilarious".
For comparing, careful writing uses more fun and most fun. You may hear funner and funnest, but they are informal and not standard.
💡 The OddLingo Trick
Fun is about how you feel. Funny is about what makes you laugh.
A rollercoaster is fun. A joke is funny. A funny rollercoaster would be a very strange rollercoaster.
