Orange: Fruit or Colour First?

Orange was a fruit name first, and the colour was named after the fruit about 500 years ago.

Wait... Which Came First?

Here is a puzzle. You have an orange, and you also have an orange crayon. Which one was named first?

Mia: Orange.

🕵️ Where Does It Come From?

The word began far away. It travelled through Sanskrit, Persian and Arabic. Experts think the first step was a South Asian language, maybe Tamil or Telugu. The Arabic form was nāranj.

Along the way, the word lost its first letter. In Spanish it is still naranja, with the n. French and Italian dropped it, and English borrowed the French word orenge.

The fruit name reached English in the Middle Ages. The colour is a much later story. The earliest known use for the colour is from about 1502, in a description of clothes for a princess. Before that, English speakers said yellow-red.

Nobody knows exactly why the colour waited so long. One idea is that oranges were rare in England for a long time, so the colour name was slow to form.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Remember the word's trip: naranja → orange.

The Spanish word still has the n. English lost it on the way. And whenever you say the colour, remember the fruit that gave its name.
