🕵️ Where Does It Come From?

Nobody knows.

The word first shows up in English around 1700. Word experts have made guesses. Some think it is a playful extension of bam, a word that suggests silliness. Others think it is related to a dialect word, bamfoozle, which also meant to deceive. A few have said it might come from French or Italian.

The word historian Anatoly Liberman looked at all the guesses and said the whole story is guesswork. The famous word expert Walter Skeat, who wrote an etymology dictionary in the 1800s, finally listed the origin as unknown.

That makes bamboozle a fun word for OddLingo: you can use it every day, and you cannot say where it began.
