The Plumber's Climb: A Silent B Tongue Twister

The plumber climbed the limb to comb the lamb. Practise a letter you write but never say, and learn why the B in these words disappears.

The plumber climbed the limb to comb the lamb.

Five words in this sentence have a B written in them, and none of them says it. Each one ends in or follows the sound M. That is the trap: your eyes see a B, and the old habit is to say it.

👅 Sounds to Practise

  • M /m/, as in climb, limb, comb, lamb. Close your lips and let the sound hum through your nose. Keep your lips closed at the end.
  • Silent B: written in plumber, climbed, limb, comb and lamb, but not said. Go straight from the sound before it to the M.
  • Said B /b/, as in bumblebee. This is the B you do say. Press your lips together and let the air pop.

Quick test: say lamb and lamp. In lamb, the lips meet and stay together with no B sound. The B was never there in the mouth.

🐢 Start Slow

Say each chunk slowly. Let the M hum, and skip the B.

The plumber climbed
the limb
to comb
the lamb.

Now say the two halves: The plumber climbed the limb … to comb the lamb.

🚶 Normal Speed

Say the whole sentence at a natural speed, as if you were telling a story about a busy farm:

The PLUM-ber CLIMBED the LIMB to COMB the LAMB.

Keep the M sounds quiet and smooth. Don't add a B at the end of each word.

🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode

Ready? Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:

The plumber climbed the limb to comb the lamb.

If you start saying the B, slow down for one round and let the M finish the word.

🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?

The silent B is a spelling habit, not a sound problem. Here is why it trips people up:

  • The B is a leftover in the spelling. After an M it makes no sound, so the spelling and the sound have drifted apart.
  • In plumber, the B comes from the Latin word for lead, plumbum. The Old French word, plummier, had no B.
  • In a fast sentence, your brain reads limb and lamb as spelled, and your lips try to pop a B that isn't there.
  • The same letter is said clearly in bumblebee, so the rule is not simply "B is silent." It depends on the word.

Spell the letter, and say the sound. The two don't always match.

👀 Words to Notice

These words rhyme with words that have no B at all, which shows the B is silent:

  • climb / time
  • comb / home
  • lamb / ham
  • limb / him

Try each pair slowly, then quickly: lamb, ham, lamb, ham.

🏆 OddLingo Challenge

  1. Round 1: say it slowly, with the M clearly heard and no B.
  2. Round 2: say the whole sentence once at normal speed.
  3. Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.

Bonus round: make your own sentence with at least three silent B words: The plumber could comb the numb lamb's thumb.
