He took a bow and tied a bow on the bough.
Bow has two sounds and two meanings. The bow you make when you bend forward rhymes with cow. The bow on a present, or a loop of ribbon, rhymes with go. Bough, a large branch of a tree, also rhymes with cow. The sentence asks you to switch between the two bows and keep track of the bough.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- OW /aʊ/, as in bow (bend) and bough. Your mouth starts open and glides to a round lip shape, as in cow.
- OH /oʊ/, as in bow (ribbon). Your lips are round from the start, as in go.
- B /b/, as in bow and bough. Your lips press together, then open.
Quick test: say cow and go. Now say bow (bend) and bow (ribbon). The spelling is the same, but the second bow rhymes with go.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly.
He took a bow
and tied a bow
on the bough.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
He TOOK a BOW and TIED a BOW on the BOUGH.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
He took a bow and tied a bow on the bough.
If the two bows start to sound the same, slow down and make the first one rhyme with cow, and the second one rhyme with go.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
Look at the three words:
bow (bend) / bow (ribbon) / bough
- The same spelling, bow, is used for two sounds. Your eyes see one word, and your mouth has to pick the right one.
- Bough looks like bow, but it has an extra GH. It rhymes with the bend-bow, so the spelling is a trap.
- The sentence repeats bow twice in a row, with a different meaning each time. Your brain has to switch between the two.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs show how spelling and sound can disagree:
- bow (bend) / bough: the same sound, two spellings
- bow (ribbon) / go: the same sound, two spellings
- bough / cow: the same sound, two spellings
🏆 OddLingo Challenge
- Round 1: say it slowly, one chunk at a time, with no mistakes.
- Round 2: say the whole sentence once at normal speed.
- Round 3: say it three times fast without stopping.
Bonus round: if you survived all three, try this one:
Ploughed through the rough, tough dough and tied the bow.
🧐 Did You Know?
The same spelling, bow, covers both the bend and the ribbon, and the two are pronounced differently. Bough is a separate word. Its GH is a spelling left from older English, and it no longer has a sound of its own.
