Lily ladles little Letty's lentil soup.
Six words, and almost every one has an L. If your L slips into R, light turns into right.
👅 Sounds to Practise
- L /l/, as in Lily, ladles, little, Letty's and lentil. Touch the tip of your tongue to the ridge behind your top teeth, and let the sound come around the sides.
- L at the end of a syllable, as in ladles, little and lentil. The tongue touches again, but the sound is deeper.
- Short E /e/, as in Letty's and lentil. A short, open eh.
Quick test: say light, then right. For L the tongue touches. For R it stays back.
🐢 Start Slow
Say each chunk slowly.
Lily ladles
little Letty's
lentil soup.
🚶 Normal Speed
Say it at a natural pace, with the stressed syllables in capitals:
LIly LAdles LITtle LETty's LENtil SOUP.
🚀 Tongue-Twister Mode
Say it three times in a row, as fast as you can:
Lily ladles little Letty's lentil soup.
If it falls apart, that is normal. Slow down and try again. Touch the tongue tip for every L.
🤯 Why Is This So Difficult?
L is easy once, and hard ten times in a row.
Lily ladles little Letty's lentil
- The tongue has to touch the ridge again and again, in short steps.
- Some L sounds are at the start of a syllable and some at the end, as in ladles and little, and they sound a little different.
- Many learners turn L into R, or R into L. In a twister full of Ls, one slip stands out.
- Lentil has a final L right after a T, which makes it easy to blur.
👀 Words to Notice
These pairs change when you swap L and R:
- light / right
- lake / rake
- lock / rock
- load / road
- long / wrong
Say each pair slowly. Feel the tongue touch for L.
