Carry Out: Do It and Finish It

Carry out means to do something and finish it, such as a plan, an order or an experiment. In this meaning, nothing is carried anywhere.

What Does Carry Out Mean?

To carry out something is to do it and finish it, especially a plan, an order, a promise or a task.

It has two close meanings:

  1. Do what you said or were asked to do: carry out a promise, a plan or an order.
  2. Do and complete a task: carry out an experiment, a survey or an investigation.

In these meanings nothing is physically carried. The idea is that you take the plan and carry it all the way to the end.

Carry out can also be literal, as in carry the boxes out of the house. There out just shows the direction, and you really are carrying something. This article is about the "do and finish" meanings.
