After a W, the letters OR are usually said UR, as in word, work and world, and the letters AR are usually said OR, as in war and warm.
First, how do they sound?
fork → FORK (OR)
work → WURK (UR, like fur)
born → BORN (OR)
worn → WORN (OR, and the exception)
word → WURD (rhymes with bird)
🌀 The weird part
Look at these pairs. The letters are almost the same.
fork → work
cord → word
form → worm
In the first word of each pair, the letters OR say or. Add a W in front, and the same letters say UR.
It is stranger than that. The W also flips things the other way.
car → war
harm → warm
Without the W, AR says ar, as in car. With the W, it says or, as in war.
So in English, a W can swap two sounds that you thought belonged to other letters.
The family to learn
These words say UR after W:
word, work, world, worm, worth, worse, worst, worship
These words say OR after W, using AR:
war, warm, warn, swarm, dwarf, quarter
The exceptions
The rule is not perfect.
wore, worn → said WORE and WORN, with an OR sound
sword → the W is silent, and it is said SORD
Spelling guides do not give a neat reason for this pattern. They treat it as a family you learn as a group.
⚠️ Common Mistakes
Spelling by sound. Many learners write UR where English uses OR.
❌ wurd, wurk, wurld
✅ word, work, world
Reading it like fork. Do not say OR after W in these words.
❌ WORD said like ward
✅ WURD, rhymes with bird
💬 In a Conversation
Sam: How do you say "work"?
Mia: WURK, like fur.
Sam: And "fork"?
Mia: FORK. The W is the difference.
Sam: So worm is form with a W?
Mia: Yes. And it says WURM.
💡 The OddLingo Trick
W flips the switch.
- OR becomes UR: fork → work.
- AR becomes OR: car → war.
Say your W words in two groups: word, work, world, worm say UR. War, warm, warn say OR.
🥡 The OddLingo Takeaway
A single letter in front can change how the next two letters sound. Word, work and world are a family of UR words, and war and warm are a family of OR words.
Learn them as groups, and check the odd ones like wore, worn and sword.
