Tuesday: Who Is Hiding in the Day Names?

Tuesday means Tiw's day, and most English day names hide the sun, the moon or an old god, copied from Roman names.

Tuesday means "Tiw's day". Tiw was a war god in old Germanic stories, and most English day names hide the sun, the moon or a figure from those stories.

First, how do you say it?

TYOOZ-day (British)
TOOZ-day (American)

Both are normal. The spelling is the same either way.

🌀 The weird part

Look at the word: T-U-E-S-D-A-Y. Nothing in it looks like a god, or like a name.

But the -day part is just day. And Tues is what is left of an Old English name: Tiw. Say Tiw's day quickly and it slides into Tuesday.

Who is Tiw?

Tiw is the Old English name of Tiu, a war god in the old Germanic stories. The Old English name of the day was Tiwesdæg, which means Tiw's day.

The same name shows up in other Germanic languages. Swedish says tisdag, and Old Norse had tysdagr.

Where did the idea come from?

The Romans named their days after the sun, the moon and five planets, each tied to a god. Their name for this day was dies Martis, which means day of Mars. Mars was their god of war. That is why French says mardi and Italian says martedì.

Germanic speakers copied the idea. They matched each Roman god with one from their own stories, then used that name instead. Mars was matched with Tiw.

The whole week

Sunday → the Sun's day
Monday → the Moon's day
Tuesday → Tiw's day (matched with Mars)
Wednesday → Woden's day (matched with Mercury)
Thursday → Thor's day (matched with Jupiter)
Friday → Frigg's day (matched with Venus)
Saturday → Saturn's day

Wednesday has its own story in Why Is There a D in "Wednesday"?.

Saturday is the odd one out. The old Germanic stories had no god to match with Saturn, so English kept the Roman name.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Spelling by sound.
❌ Tuseday, Chewsday

Capital letters. Days of the week always start with a capital letter in English.
❌ I'll see you on tuesday.
✅ I'll see you on Tuesday.

💬 In a Conversation

Sam: Is Tuesday named after a person?
Mia: Sort of. It's named after Tiw, a war god from old stories.
Sam: And Saturday?
Mia: Saturn, a Roman god. It's the one the stories never changed.
Sam: So my week is a museum.
Mia: A museum that says "Monday" in a very sleepy voice.

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Tues = Tiw's. Say Tiw's day three times fast and you get Tuesday.

For the rest of the week, think: sun, moon, then four old names, and one Roman one.

🥡 The OddLingo Takeaway

Tuesday is a name tag from a very old story. The day names carry the sun, the moon and old gods, in words we say without thinking.
