Sign, Design, Signal: The Silent G That Comes Back

The G is silent in sign and design but spoken in signal and signature. The G stays in the spelling because the words share a root, Latin signum.

The G in sign is silent, but it comes back in signal and signature, because all these words grew from the same Latin word, signum.

First, How Do You Say Them?

  • sign: SYNE (no G sound)
  • design: dih-ZYNE (no G sound)
  • signal: SIG-nul (G is spoken)
  • signature: SIG-nuh-chur (G is spoken)

The Weird Part

Look at the letters s-i-g-n. In sign the G is silent. Add a few letters, and you get signal, where it is suddenly there, loud and clear.

sign → SYNE
signal → SIG-nul

It is the same four letters in the same order, and the sound changes. The G stays in the spelling of the short word, and it is a clue that the word belongs to the signal family.

Where They Come From

Sign comes from Latin signum, "an identifying mark, token or symbol", through Old French signe. It reached English in the early 1200s. Signal comes from the same Latin word and is recorded in English in the late 1300s.

Signature and design are on the same family list. In all of them, the G belongs to the Latin stem. Today it is silent in sign and design, but the spelling still shows it.

A Clue That Helps You Spell Them

If you ever wonder whether to write the G in sign, think of signal. Hear the G in signal, and you know it is hiding in sign too.
