Rhythm has no A, E, I, O or U at all. It still has two vowel sounds: the Y says one, and the second one has no letter of its own.
First, how do you pronounce it?
RITH-um
The stress is on the first part. It sounds like rith plus um.
The weird part
Look at the letters: R-H-Y-T-H-M. Six letters, and not one of the five usual vowels.
spelling: rhythm
sound: RITH-um
Two odd things happen:
- The Y does the job of the vowel in the first part. It sounds like the i in sit.
- The second part, -thm, is said "thum". The quiet um sound has no letter to show it.
So the word has two vowel sounds and only one letter to write them with.
Where does "rhythm" come from?
Rhythm comes from the Greek word rhythmos, which meant "measured flow" or "movement in time". The Greek word comes from rhein, "to flow".
English first had the word as rime, which came through Latin and French and also meant "rhyme". Spellings like rithme were used for a while too.
In the 1500s, the spelling was changed to look more like the Greek word. That is where the RH at the start came from, and the Y. English kept those Greek-looking letters and they have been there ever since.
📌 Good to know
A few other words get by without A, E, I, O or U, because the Y works as the vowel: myth, gym, crypt and lynx.
Rhythm is the one that feels strangest, because it also has two Hs and a final M that carries a vowel sound.

✅ rhythm
Don't hunt for a missing vowel.
❌ Where is the E in rhythm?
✅ There is no vowel letter. The Y is working as the vowel.
