Have, Give, Love: Why the Silent E After V?

English words that end in a V sound get a silent E, so have, give and love end in an E that does not change the vowel the way it does in cave or five.

English spelling prefers an E after a final V, so have, give and love end in a silent E, and in those three words it does not change the vowel.

First, how do you say them?

have → HAV
give → GIV
love → LUV

All three have a short vowel. The final E is silent, and it does not lengthen anything.

🌀 The weird part

A silent E at the end of a word usually tells you the vowel before it is long: cap becomes cape, kit becomes kite. Compare these pairs:

gave (long A) → but have (short A)
five (long I) → but give (short I)
cove (long O) → but love (short U)

The E is there in both words of each pair. In the first word, it changes the vowel. In the second, it does nothing to the vowel at all.

So why is the E there?

Many English words that end in a V sound are written with a final E. It is a spelling habit, not a sound rule. The E is not telling you how the vowel sounds. It is helping the word look right at the end.

Some common words that follow it:

have, give, live, love, above, glove, shove, serve

A few short or borrowed words, such as rev, break the habit. They are rare.

Where the V came from

In Old English, an F between two vowels was said as V. This is the same change that gave us knife, knives (see Knife, Knives). Spelling guides list give and love as exceptions to the usual vowel-lengthening and connect it to that old F-to-V change.

So the E gives the V a seat at the end of the word, and the short vowel stays short.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

Do not drop the E.
❌ hav, giv, luv
✅ have, give, love

Do not read the E as a long vowel.
❌ Give rhymes with five.
✅ Give rhymes with live (the verb), not with five.

💬 In a Conversation

Sam: Why does "have" end in E?
Mia: Because English words don't like to end in V.
Sam: But "gave" and "have" don't rhyme.
Mia: The E tries. It just can't make "have" say "hayv".

💡 The OddLingo Trick

Think of the E as a chair for the V. English likes to give the V a seat at the end of the word.

The chair is silent. It does not change how anything sounds.

🥡 The OddLingo Takeaway

A final V usually gets a silent E. In have, give, love, the E is a spelling habit, and it does not make the vowel long.

Compare it with the more famous job of silent E in Silent E: The Letter That Changes the Vowel.
